About the workshop

Practical skills, not theory alone

Doing good research is only one part of becoming a successful researcher. Many postgraduate students and academics have valuable research ideas and findings but experience difficulties turning them into publishable journal articles, identifying reputable international journals, using emerging research technologies responsibly, managing references, finding funding opportunities, and preparing competitive grant proposals.

The EBSULING 2026 Pre-Conference Research Development Workshop is designed to address these practical challenges. Unlike a conventional lecture, the workshop is built around demonstrations, practical examples, guided exercises and real research problems. Participants will learn not only what to do but also how to do it.

The programme

Three intensive tracks

Track 1 · 2 hours

From Research to Publishable Article

Writing for International Journals

You have completed a thesis, dissertation, conference paper or research project. You believe the work is good enough to publish — but how do you turn it into an article an international journal will take seriously?

Practical session

Manuscript Clinic: from weak draft to publishable paper

Participants work with a sample weak abstract, introduction or manuscript section, identify its problems, and examine with the facilitator how it can be transformed into a clearer and more publishable version. Bring an abstract or short section of a paper you are currently developing.

By the end of track 1 you should be able to

Identify the publishable contribution of your research, structure an effective journal article, select an appropriate reputable journal, prepare a manuscript for submission, and respond more confidently to editorial and peer-review decisions.

Track 2 · 2 hours

AI-Smart Research

Responsible AI, Referencing, Research Tools and Scholarly Visibility

Artificial intelligence can make some research tasks faster, but it can also generate false information, invent references and create serious problems of authorship and research integrity. The question is no longer whether researchers should use AI, but how they can use it intelligently, ethically and verifiably without surrendering scholarly responsibility.

Practical session

Live demonstration: the AI-smart research workflow

A worked demonstration from research question through search strategy, literature discovery, source verification, reference manager, in-text citation and bibliography, to responsible AI-assisted editing. Bring a laptop or internet-enabled device.

By the end of track 2 you should be able to

Use AI more responsibly in your research workflow, recognise the risks of AI-generated information, verify sources and references, use reference-management tools more effectively, and strengthen your scholarly identity and research visibility.

Track 3 · 2 hours

From Research Idea to Funded Project

Finding and Winning Research Grants

A good research idea does not automatically become a fundable project. Funders support projects that fit their priorities, address clearly defined problems, propose credible solutions and demonstrate achievable outcomes and meaningful impact.

Practical session

Grant Clinic: turning an idea into a fundable project

Working with a real or simulated funding call, participants follow the sequence from eligibility and funder priority through problem, objective, activity and output to outcome and impact — seeing how an ordinary research idea is reframed into the foundation of a competitive application.

By the end of track 3 you should be able to

Search more strategically for funding, determine your eligibility, interpret funding calls, align research ideas with funders’ priorities, develop the major components of a competitive proposal, prepare basic project budgets, and approach potential collaborators more effectively.
